toutorial eight:assisstive technology

Tutorial Eight: Assistive technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology (your Cook and Hussey reading may be helpful with this).

Assistive technology refers to a broad range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by people with disabilities.Cook, A.M., & Hussey, S.M. (2000). Assistive technologies: principles and practice. St Louis: Mosby.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions.

Blink switch. This is attached to a pair of glasses, when the wearer of these glasses blinks, this action activates the device to turn another object on or off. This is a compact device which fits to a pair of normal sized glasses and has a small control box which is used to increase and decrease sensitivity of the blink action according to the user. The cost of this item is $1,000.00

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user? Provide examples here from the tutorial and lecture.

This assistive device is a significant tool which enables a person to have some control over the environment in which they are in. It enables people who are non-verbal and who have extreme limitations in movement to make their own choices and can improve communication significantly for the client

tutoral six: the internet and online communities

Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

Either search online for a community which interest you or choose one of the provided online communities to investigate. Make sure your selected a community that comprises some form of online forum, discussion page or chat room. You may also wish to see if your community has a Wikipedia entry.

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating

The community i am going to investigate is my space www.myspace.com

What is the brief or focus of this community

MySpace is a popular social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos for people of all ages around the world

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

MySpace offers services such as a general Profile setting, where you can update your mood, as well as your fav movies, bands, TV shows etc as well as being able to up-load photo's video's, audio-clips etc to your general profile, write blogs, as well as a comment space, where people can leave you comments. You can style your MySpace page to match your personality, by colour co-ordinating it, adding slide-shows, quiz results and joining groups that interest you.MySpace features in general are: Bulletins,Groups,MySpaceIM,MySpaceTV,MySpace Mobile, MySpace News, MySpace Classifieds and MySpace Karaoke

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

The reason why I have a My-space page is so it’s easier to stay in touch with my friends & family who are in a different part of the country. It's easy to see what they are up to with their life’s by having a quick look at their page and you can look at photo's that they have posted to see what they have been up. I think a lot of people use my-space for this reason as its quicker and easier than posting a letter these days.Other people may be seeking friendship from other people and wanting to get to know other people in there own area. Relationships may also be formed over MySpace but it isn’t something I would do, as you never know if the person contacting you is telling the truth, or if they are some-one prowling on unassuming, naive people

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).

Activities (258131 groups)Automotive (56390 groups)Business & Entrepreneurs (25696 groups)Cities & Neighbourhoods (44369 groups)Companies / Co-workers (40109 groups)Computers & Internet (18990 groups)Countries & Regional (14911 groups)Cultures & Community (90529 groups)Entertainment (395449 groups)Family & Home (54542 groups)Fan Clubs (273493 groups)Fashion & Style (86038 groups)Film & Television (51012 groups)Food, Drink & Wine (45263 groups)Games (75199 groups)Gay, Lesbian & Bi (42520 groups)Government & Politics (35143 groups)Health, Wellness, Fitness (30779 groups)Hobbies & Crafts (37904 groups)Literature & Arts (35171 groups)Money & Investing (15672 groups)Music (355313 groups)Nightlife & Clubs (67833 groups)Non-Profit & Philanthropic (23240 groups)Other (1470810 groups)Pets & Animals (41627 groups)Places & Travel (21011 groups)Professional Organizations (50950 groups)Recreation & Sports (150304 groups)Religion & Beliefs (118518 groups)Romance & Relationships (73636 groups)Schools & Alumni (195876 groups)Science & History (10417 groups)Sorority/Fraternities (33809 groups)And discuss anything, for example:Posted: 27 Dec 2006, 19:24 Let's make our own list of 1,000 places to see before you die.

These are a list of topics that are being discussed on MySpace.

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

My-space has a page specially dedicated to safety and security: http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cms.viewpage&placement=safety_pagehome.You have the ability to set your profile to private, therefore only your friends or immediate contacts can view your details, but if your profile isn't set to private, then any videos or pictures you have uploaded become available for anybody on the internet to use. Also people add you all the time and you have no idea who they are

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity

You are given the opportunity to meet people all over the world, and you get the ability to find out other peoples perspectives on a certain topic. It's easy to get to, for example, no having to travel anywhere as you can do it all in the comfort of your own home! People can communicate with other people who have the same interests, or have the same illness etc.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.

There is no actual face to face stuff, its all over the internet, so you lose some sense of sociability....some people spend all their time in front of a computer, rather than getting out into the community and communicating with people, which isn’t good for building social skills

Task One: Follow instructions and work in a small group to plan and produce and edit a 30 second short.
Task Two: Set up a U Tube account
Task Three: Follow instructions to posting your video on U Tube.
Task Four (Blog Posting): Provide a brief summary of the services offered by U Tube. Information can be drawn from the week five tutorial hand out.

You tube is a popular web video sharing site that lets absolutely anybody store short videos for private or public viewing. You tube was founded In 2005. You tube provides a venue for sharing videos among friends and family as well as a showcase for new and experienced videographers. Featuring videos it considers entertaining. You tube has become a destination for ambitious videosgraphers, as well as amateurs who fancy making a statement of some kind and then there’s the nosey people who make it possible to keep on going.

Task Five (Blog Posting): Provide a brief account (1-2 paragraphs) on how the use of planning (storyboarding and scripting aided your groups short film.
\

When we were told that we had to make a 30 second film you could see everyone’s faces drop ..well mine mostly. We got into groups and then we were given a sheet which was helpful to up to brainstorm on. It was beneficial for us as a group as it let us all know what we wanted individual and it helped us to look at all the individual wants to be able to get a picture of how we could put them together to what we wanted collectively as a group. Using this template (storyboard) meant that it wasn’t set in stone and some of the shots we envisioned that were not possible could be changed J

tutorial two: digital camera use and applications

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”. Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

When comparing the two I thought about how there are things I like and dislike about
Both digital and film cameras.

For one it’s nice to actually have the physical photo it was always so exciting going to the Photoshop/dry cleaners and picking up the family birthday /xmas photos.

i also enjoyed the suspense and excited of waiting till the photos were printed those two hours where you would look around town.
But the down point of film cameras is when you get the photos they could be all terrible blurry, red eyed. Out of focus and there is nothing you can do about it! Where as with a digital camera you can delete them as you go or even up load them afterwards and Photoshop them to make yourself more beautiful .As its easier to just keep them on memory disk and not print of digital cameras you do tend to run out of memory. But with digital you can upload them but with film once its fun out its run out. Digital cameras could get wet stolen or your computer could crash aghhhh!!!!!
But over all I definitely prefer digital cameras as its sometimes fun just to take photos for the sake of taking photos then to vainly play with them making yourself look better for example digitally enhancing your eyes and making your skin flawless.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Images can be stored in many different ways such as on cds or dvds (you could have a family slideshow fun!) they can be sent and shared on the internet on various sharing sites such as bebo,my space, blooger, and heaps of other websites . they can be changed and manipulated in special programs specially made for this such as Photoshop and adobe Photoshop.

Tutorial one :: Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Provide a definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology (APA reference required)

Information Technology:
The study or use of processes ( esp. using computers, micro electronics, and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving, and sending information (e.g. words, numbers, pictures).
The New Zealand Oxford Paperback Dictionary.(1998).In T. Deverson(Ed). NewYork;Oxford University Press.

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

Very, Most people have a wide range and number of micro electronics from cell phones to I-Pods, and most houses have a computer and its very uncommon for less than one person in a family to have a cell phone most likely the whole family has one even kids!

What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?

i feel comfortable using most ipods as I used to have one lap tops sometimes but not with really technical stuff. With all cellphones I feel comfortable and feel I am as competent as my technology savvy generationites

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?

Email is the most commonly used IT that I have seen being used. Digital cameras are starting to become more commonly used to due to the decrease in price and OTs are seeing the benefits for example taking pictures of houses to look at and analyse later or to take pictures of group activities for people with memory problems or for promotion of associations for example a brain injury activities groups.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (e.g. mobile phones) or systems (e.g. internet)

People could use the photos or information for unrelated things that could be damaging.

Consent

It could be seen by people that it should not be.

People can access them that maybe should not be able to access information due to people’s ability in IT devices.

Provide a definition of Computer Ethics (APA reference required)

Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct

Association for Computing Machinery, Inc. Association for Computing Machinery: Code of Ethics

Provide a definition of Intellectual Property (APA reference required)

Intellectual property (IP) is a
legal field that refers to creations of the mind such as musical, literary, and artistic works; inventions; and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce, including copyrights, trademarks, patents, and related rights. Under intellectual property law, the holder of one of these abstract "properties" has certain exclusive rights to the creative work, commercial symbol, or invention which is covered by it

Provide a definition of Social Justice (APA reference required)

Social justice refers to the concept of a
society in which justice is achieved in every aspect of society, rather than merely the administration of law. The term can be amorphous and refer to sometimes self-contradictory values of justice. It is generally thought of as a world which affords individuals and groups fair treatment and an impartial share of the benefits of society. (Different proponents of social justice have developed different interpretations of what constitutes fair treatment and an impartial share.) It can also refer to the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society.
Social justice is both a
philosophical problem and an important issue in politics, religion and civil society. Most individuals wish to live in a just society, but different political ideologies have different conceptions of what a 'just society' actually is. The term "social justice" is often employed by the political left to describe a society with a greater degree of economic egalitarianism, which may be achieved through progressive taxation, income redistribution, or property redistribution. The right wing also uses the term social justice, but generally believes that a just society is best achieved through the operation of a free market, which they believe provides equality of opportunity and promotes philanthropy and charity. Both the right and the left tend to agree on the importance of rule of law, human rights, and some form of a welfare safety net (though the left supports this last element to a greater extent than the right).
Social Justice features as an apolitical philosophical concept (insofar as any philosophical analysis of politics can be free from bias) in much of John Rawls' writing. It is fundamental to
Catholic social teaching, and is one of the Four Pillars of the Green Party upheld by the worldwide green parties. Some of the tenets of social justice, sometimes renamed civil justice, have been adopted by those who lie on the left or center-left of the political spectrum (e.g. Socialists, Social Democrats, etc). Social justice is also a concept that some use to describe the movement towards a socially just world. In this context, social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality.

Provide a definition of Informed Consent (APA reference required)

Informed consent is a
legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon an appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action. The individual needs to be in possession of relevant facts and also of his or her reasoning faculties, such as not being mentally retarded or mentally ill and without an impairment of judgment at the time of consenting. Such impairments might include illness, intoxication, insufficient sleep, and other health problems.
Some acts cannot legally take place because of a lack of informed consent. In cases where an individual is considered unable to give informed consent, another person is generally authorized to give consent on their behalf. Examples of this include the parents or
legal guardians of a child and caregivers for the mentally ill. In cases where an individual is provided limited facts, serious ethical issues may arise. Examples of this in a clinical trial in medical research are anticipated and prevented by an ethics committee or Institutional Review Board.

In your own words briefly summarise why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.
Because the world we live in is becoming increasingly dependent on ITC and the awareness of safety and ethical issues is important for providing the best service as a clinician in practise.
